Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI executives, siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, Anthropic is a San Francisco-based AI startup focused on AI safety and foundational model research. The company is structured as a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), emphasizing long-term safety and responsibility in AI development, distinguishing itself from purely commercial ventures.
Anthropic's flagship product is its Claude AI assistant, a powerful competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT. Since its initial release in late 2022, Claude has undergone several iterations: Claude 2 was launched in 2023 targeting consumer applications, and Claude 3.5 series (codenamed "Sonnet") was released in 2024, showcasing significant improvements in comprehension and creative capabilities. In September 2024, Anthropic launched Claude Enterprise, a service designed to help businesses integrate their AI technology into operations. Claude models utilize an innovative "Constitutional AI" training approach, prioritizing safety and reliability.
This funding round strengthens Anthropic's position in its competition with OpenAI and others. For comparison, OpenAI completed a $6.6 billion funding round in October 2024 at a $157 billion valuation. Anthropic has secured significant tech industry backing: Amazon has committed up to $8 billion in investments and established a strategic partnership making AWS their primary cloud platform. They also plan to integrate Claude models into Amazon Alexa and other products. Additionally, Google invested $2 billion in Anthropic in 2023 while continuing to develop their own Gemini AI models.
The funding highlights the AI industry's momentum, with approximately half of US venture capital flowing into AI companies in 2023, totaling $209 billion. This massive capital influx is accelerating the "arms race" in AI technology development, as companies compete to develop increasingly powerful models. While investors aren't expecting immediate profitability from these AI startups, they believe that artificial general intelligence could potentially create trillions of dollars in value.
